A most useful piece of kit from a company of excellent renown, and a good alternative to standard GPS receivers for people wanting something easy to use for basic ‘point’ finding. The ability to mark more than three positions would be useful, and I would prefer deletion to be possible by a means other than over-writing, but these two ‘cons’ do not prevent me from thoroughly recommending it.

Very specific use as a ‘return to base’ GPS driven machiune. Does not give GPS co-ordinates but tracks how far, and in what direction, you are from a fixed starting point. Screen is prone to damage. Low battery warning is late. Only a few minutes left when you get the warning.

    Useful tool but with limitations

I have to confess that I am a nerdy gadget freak and my wife constantly chastises me for my latest acquisition. This one caught my imagination. I have several GPS devices with very comprehensive functions (the best being the Garmin CSx60). This product however is different in that it offers very little information to the user. It is subsequently very simple to use, relatively small and compact and very light.

It allows the user to enter and store the GPS co-ordinates for three locations. Home, Car and Star (Star being a favourite place). Operation is simple, turn it on, (outside with a clear view of the sky), wait for a couple of minutes for the device to lock onto the satellites (indicated by a flashing satellite symbol), wait for it to stop flashing. Now select one of the three locations and press and hold a button for around 5-6 seconds. The unit flashes the display and that is it. Now as you walk away from that location the device indicates how far you are away from that position and which direction it is in. It works up to 99.9 miles or 99.9km and records down to yds or metres accuracy. In practice you could expect to get within +/-5-10 yds of where you entered the point. It depends on how many satellites were connected at the time (you can’t really tell), and whether the sky was obstructed or not. It also features a self calibrating compass with degrees read out.

Don’t expect to be able to use this in a car, the distance will be correct but the direction will be influenced by magnetic fields in the car. It is an outdoor device, best used away from magnetic fields.

So why buy one :-) Well, I can relate to the following scenario’s they don’t come up so often, but when they do it would be a useful gadget to have. If you go to a large event where there are 5000 other people it would be a lot easier to find your car. The other application is if you travel moderately frequently and want to go out and walk around this device means that you don’t need to backtrack along the route you went out on. You could follow a circular route and approach your source from a different direction. It requires a leap of faith if you have not used GPS before. Useful for business travellers who want to do more than jump on a plane go to a hotel, a business meeting and back to the airport.

It is very intuitive to use (you can download the manual from the Bushnell site if you are curious), it is very light weight, a little bulky but fits in the hand comfortably. It seems to feature a sensitive GPS receiver (they were not so good around 4-5 yrs ago). I cannot comment on battery life, but use of the new lithium batteries (AAA x 2) would be useful.

I did consider when I looked at it that it might be nice to have lattitude and longitude (so you could call someone and tell them where you were located), or the time, but then these things would only make it more complicated.

So in summary a simple to use GPS device. If you want to get back to where you started from and like simplicity then buy one. The only warning I would make is do take care not to reprogram your starting point while you are using it to get back to your starting point, or trying to program in a second or third point. This would be a disaster. Having said this the risk is very small. You have to hold the button down for several seconds. Something to put the device in if you are carrying it in your pocket would be useful as the screen could get scratched. Other than that I am happy with the purchase and look forward to it’s first proper application.
